China drinking game “dice cup” Part 1

Chinese dice cup (骰盅) is a common game in drinking especially in China, you could win through rules, tactics, foul play or luck. So how to win? Keep track on my 3 articles to become invincible!

First we must understand the rules of dice cup. It consists of 5 dices in a cup for each player. Minimum number of players is two and could increase as many as you like. Every dice consists of 6 faces from number 1 to 6. Player has to guess the total number of faces on every dices on all players’ cups, guess correctly win the game, guess wrongly drink alcohol, simple as that.

Example on 2 players.

• Player 1 shake the cup consist of numbers  2-3-4-5-5
• Player 2 shake the cup consist of numbers 1-1-2-6-3
• Player 1 call 3-6 which means he guess there are 3 faces of 6 out of total 10 dices for 2 players. First caller must call minimum 2 faces of any number from 1 till 6 or above because there are 2 players, if 3 players minimum call is 3 faces of any numbers and so forth.
• Player 2 must call larger than 3-6 which is 4-2 or above, why 4-2? Because face of 1 is the biggest and could represent any faces of number, hence player 2 could also shout 3-1 which is bigger than 3-6. But once any player call face of 1 it will not become the joker in representing any faces of number but could only represent as face of 1. So player 2 call 4-3.
• Player 1 call for open cup which means he don’t believe player 2 call for 4-3, so who wins? Player 1 lost so he has to drink because he got 1 face of 3 but player 2 got 3 faces of 3, why? Remember I told you as long as face of 1 has not called out before could use as joker representing any faces of numbers, hence player 2 got 2 faces of 1 representing 2 faces of 3, including his own 1 face of 3 same as player 1 total up 4 faces of 3, bingo!

This is a game of probability guessing on the winning chances and also a good psychological mind game, therefore attracted many Chinese in playing during drinking. You could set other rules in bringing more excitement and increasing the difficulty level as below:

1. Increase the volume in penalty drinking from 1 glass to 2 glasses per game.
2. Increase minimum number of faces call to 5 or more instead minimum 3 faces of numbers call for 3 players game.
3. Increase the number of dices from 5 to 7 or more, this would increase the difficulty in guessing on probability.
4. Face 1 cannot be the joker hence could not represent any faces of numbers.
5. Face 1 could only represent the numbers shown in your dice cup, example 1-3-5-5-6, face 1 only represent 3-5-6 but not 2-4.
6. Only allow to shake the cup once, foul must drink 1 glass.
7. Drop dice during shaking must drink 1 glass per dice drop.
8. Call out twice bigger from your previous player to reverse the call, example player 3 call 3-6 and player 4 must call 5-6 or above instead of 4-6 to reverse the next call back to player 3 instead the next caller player 5.
9. You could open all players’ cups, example there are 4 players and after 1 round of calls back to player 1 he could call for player 2, 3 and 4 to open cups together, if player 1 guess correctly all other 3 players have to drink but if only player 3 call correctly then only player 1,2 and 4 drink.
10. Every players must memorise all faces of numbers in their cup and when any player call for open must shout out their numbers, if shout wrongly drink.
